The New York Public Interest Research Group (NYPIRG) is New York State's largest nonpartisan, not-for-profit research and advocacy organization. Since 1973, NYPIRG's staff of issue experts, organizers, researchers and attorneys has coordinated statewide public education campaigns and empowered students and community members to play a meaningful policy role in the areas of consumer protection, environmental preservation, good government and higher education.

As one of New York’s leading statewide full-time consumer watchdogs, NYPIRG has over the past 34 years helped win critical protections for consumers including stringent standards for playground safety, the generic drug law, item pricing laws, an anti-predatory lending law, hearing aid sales protections, new and used car “Lemon Laws,” auto rental reforms, student loan protections, Internet consumer purchase protections and the requirement that banks offer low-cost "basic banking" checking accounts.

NYPIRG has warned consumers about the dangers of payday lending, fought increases in ATM surcharges and bank fees, and published auto insurance guides that helped drivers lower their insurance rates. Our annual Toy Safety and Playground Safety Surveys give parents information they need to protect their children, and the NYPIRG Fuel Buyers Group saves consumers hundreds of dollars per year on the price of home heating oil and natural gas.

College students involved in NYPIRG's consumer work hone their research and writing skills, teach financial literacy, run online book swaps that help classmates save money on textbooks and staff call-in centers to provide procedural advice for New Yorkers navigating the small claims court system.
