Privacy Policy

Introduction

This notice discloses our information gathering and dissemination practices for CyberStreetSmart.org, a Web site created and managed by the New York Public Interest Research Group Fund/NYPIRG.

Our Commitment to Your Privacy

CyberStreetSmart.org is the centerpiece of a statewide campaign to help consumers protect their identities and avoid online scams and fraud. Safeguarding your privacy is a crucial part of our mission. NYPIRG will not sell or give away any personal information you provide (such as your name or contact information), nor will it make available your information to any outside organization without your express consent.

The Information We Collect & How We Use It

You do not have to register to use CyberStreetSmart.org, and we require no personal information for you to access the Web site's content. We do, however, retain any information you send to us by email or submit to us via our Tell Us Your Story Webform.

The information that you send to NYPIRG is used only for its stated purposes: emails are collected so that we may respond adequately to your inquiries; and information collected via the Tell Us Your Story Webform is used solely to follow up with visitors who have submitted a personal story of online fraud and wish to be considered for a profile on CyberStreetSmart.org.

When you visit our site, information from your browser, including your IP address, the duration of your visit, pages you visited, and files you download may be recorded in our Web site server logs, but no personal information is collected. NYPIRG may compile this anonymous information into aggregate data so that we may better understand how visitors use our Web site. NYPIRG may share this aggregate data with outside parties.

What happens if you choose to "Tell Us Your Story"

Not all personal stories of online fraud submitted via the Tell Us Your Story Webform will be profiled on CyberStreetSmart.org. Visitors who submit a story that we think exemplifies a particular type of Internet scam or fraud may be contacted by a NYPIRG representative, who will schedule a telephone interview. A draft profile will then be written, based upon the story submitted via the Web site and the interview. If we do use your profile, you can choose to have it posted anonymously. No profile will be posted without the express consent of the submitter.
